Rex is the main character of the series ESES. While he isn't able to manifest magic, he is an exception to the East Squad. He was the second member to join and
Rex cares about his appearance, but he doesn't really work on it. He has bleached blonde hair and almost always wears goggles with red-orange lenses. His eyes are blue and orange. He has a large spike collar, and wears a jacket with bones printed on it over his ESES uniform. He also wears big boots.
Rex is very distant. With the very few people he is closest with, He is actually very open, but can become very reserved and push people away very suddenly. Other than that, though, Rex really doesn't like attention, especially since his parents overwhelmed him with attention after his siblings died to compensate for having 2 less children. Rex presents himself as an unapproachable person to outsiders on accident. As much as he distances himself from a majority of ESES, he genuinely cares about them and wishes he could be better for them. He has really low self confidence and believes he deserves to be thrown out of ESES.
At a very young age, Rex and his sister, Sara were thrown out of their household because their parents couldn't afford to take care of them. Rex and Sara were picked up by two ladies who were family friends. They were then raised with another kid, Niko. Rex was a very optimistic and outgoing child. He looked up to Sara more than anything. She always loved engineering and building things and Rex aspired to be like her. When Rex was 13, on a walk, the three of them encountered the Angel Jester and only Rex made it out alive. This was one of the biggest turning points in Rex's life. After that, he was compltely different. He always shut himself away from everyone and got tired of people talking to him. His parents wanted an execution squad to kill the jester that killed his siblings, so they went to the West squad. The West squad had three kids, and one of them saw Rex as an opportunity for them. He wanted to start a new execution squad, and if he got Rex, he might be able to recruit enough people. Turns out, Rex isnt a magician, and cannot kill jesters, so he just used him as an extra body so that they have enough people to officially start the team. They started ESES, but it wasn't like Rex could really do much. After this, Rex never actually considers himself apart of ESES because he feels unwanted. Since he was always inspired by his sister, he decided to learn some engineering and pick up some of her projects that she never got to finish and eventually became obsessed with making new things. He'd plan and build things to make up for what he couldn't do for ESES. Time goes on and more members get recruited into ESES. Most notably Luka, who must live in Rex's room due to space. As Luka gets more comfortable and starts working under ESES officially, Rex starts to actually get involved in killing jesters with Luka. Rex engineered his own little weapon that can sometimes kill jesters without needing to be a magician, and he is able to get by.
After Marina's death, the fact that Rex is useless in this team consumes him even more, and his desire to become useful turns him into a jester. His only ability as a jester is to now be able to manifest his own magic. He uses this and kills as many jesters as he possibly can before ESES finds him. With all of his built up resentment towards all of the members of ESES, he tries to hurt them as much as possible, but he can't kill them, and eventually they bring him to a state where he cant do anything.
The two of them are best friends, and bond over their human dysfunction. They both help each other in areas that the other lacks. honestly theyre like a beard and a lesbian theyre like platonically married
Rex and Lena probably have the closest friendship in the series TBH. Lena is one of the first and only people Rex opens up to. Lena understands him, so he puts his trust in her. While Rex often feels insecure because Lena is very confident and he thinks that she's "better than her", he does recognize that Lena treats him as an equal. They get into shenanigans together and bond over making fun of Louis.
Ketos is an android that Rex created. Being quite an impressive project, Rex put a lot of care into creating Ketos for many years. After completion, Rex is surprised that Ketos basically has a mind and will of their own. His android forms a very strong bond with him and keeps him company when he's lonely. There's no stakes or baggage with Ketos, and Rex finds a lot of comfort with that. Ketos has expressed that their relationship is like that of creator and creation, or almost like rex is their older brother. Rex is very new to this sort of relationship, since he has always been the lesser one in every major relationship in his life.
